Gary Cooper and Franchot Tone star in this sweeping adventure set in India when it was the jewel in the crown of the British Empire. Cooper is an experienced officer among crack troops around the Khyber Pass on India's northern frontier. Ton is his buddy, well bred and wry. These dashing men, ordered into border warfare with Afghans and guerillas, must also look after the commanding colonel's son, a young and untested officer (Richard Cromwell). The three become a gallant trio; one for all and all for one of the most popular pictures of the 1930s. The excitement never stops as they plunge into action, risking all for victory, enduring perils and proving their courage in a thrilling fortress battle. The movie, directed by Henry Hathaway, is notable not only for this spectacular clash and for the grandeur of its exotic settings, but also for its humor, the cunning and guile of the enemy, and the immense personal appeal of these comrades in arms.
