The heart of this spunky, sweetly beautiful film is lovely, feisty Mary Pickford, of the baby face, lush curls, and sturdy little body. Pickford is Amarilly Jenkins, a poor lass from San Francisco's Clothes-Line Alley, hard by Chinatown. She's proud of her heritage, a long line of Irish washerwomen: "I likes scrubbin'!" She's content in her poverty, sharing "Irish turkey" (meatloaf?) dinners with her roly-poly ma, played by Kate Price--one can hear her infectious laughter even though the film is silent--and her five rambunctious baby brothers. Young bartender Terry McGowen (William Scott), with whom Amarilly keeps company, has waited three years for a good-night kiss. Then fate sweeps Amarilly into an entanglement with handsome, upper-crust artist Gordon Phillips (Norman Kerry). It's clear that this won't last. As Amarilly tells Gordon, "You can't mix ice cream and pickles!" But Amarilly and her family have to learn this the hard way, deliberately humiliated by Gordon's snooty aunt (Ida Waterman, as the film's requisite battle-ax).

The picture effortlessly mixes comedy, social commentary, drama, and melodrama. The legacy of the literature of American social realism can be felt here in the business about haves and have-nots. But there is none of the grim tragedy of, say, Stephen Crane's novel Maggie: A Girl of the Streets. Although effectively emotional, the film has an appealing lightness, deriving from the simplicity of its shots and acting style. This edition has been masterfully restored from the original negative, with gorgeous atmospheric tinting (indigo for exterior night scenes, golden for day, etc.) and an affecting new score by the Mont Alto Orchestra. Also included on the tape is a bonus short film, The Dream, from 1911, in which a drunk, philandering husband dreams of his wife's revenge. (Note the beautiful Arts and Crafts period dcor in the couple's home.) --Laura Mirsky

A neat World War II thriller, 13 Rue Madeleine benefits from the postwar craze for shooting outside the studio. With Quebec doubling for occupied France, this is a spy movie with a sense of open air. James Cagney plays an OSS agent, training his recruits for an important pre-D-Day mission. When one of them turns out to be a Nazi spy, Cagney must parachute into France himself and straighten things out. Director Henry Hathaway and producer Louis de Rochemont pioneered the docu-drama approach with The House on 92nd Street, and they again use newsreel footage and stentorian narrator here, blended into the fictional story. The script is slightly muddled, but there are a fistful of suspenseful situations and a gangbusters ending--as well as the typically wired-up Cagney, who is exactly the guy you want on your side if D-Day is hanging in the balance. --Robert Horton

This 1946 film celebrates the life, career, and showmanship of the late Florenz Ziegfeld, perhaps the most famous and influential Broadway producer in the early decades of the 20th century. The film, ostensibly directed by Vincente Minnelli, takes an unusual form. We open in Heaven, at the home of the late Ziegfeld (played by William Powell, who also played him in The Great Ziegfeld), who thinks back on his life and wonders what kind of show he would put on with the talent of today (meaning 1946). What follows is an elaborately staged revue, similar to the blend of cheesecake, music, and comedy that made up the Ziegfeld Follies--but with the stars of that moment (plus actual Ziegfeld veteran Fanny Brice). The most welcome presence is Fred Astaire, who appears in three numbers--including the only dance number ever filmed that paired Astaire with Gene Kelly at the height of their powers. The contrast is fascinating. Otherwise, you get a number of musical scenes, the best of which features Lena Horne (singing "Love"), the worst Judy Garland (in "An Interview"). And there's plenty of other stuff: everything from an Esther Williams water ballet to an excerpt of La Traviata to a variety of broadly acted vaudeville skits featuring actors Keenan Wynn, Edward Arnold, Fanny Brice, and Hume Cronyn. --Marshall Fine
